The purpose of the ACOP program is to increase and continue to develop the number of trained Aboriginal coaches and officials in Saskatchewan. The Aboriginal Coaches and Officials Program (ACOP) is a joint program between Sask Sport and the Coaches Association of Saskatchewan (CAS). Its purpose is to increase and continue to develop the number of trained Aboriginal coaches and officials in Saskatchewan. Since its inception in 2007, the program has evolved to support Aboriginal coaches and officials in a variety of programs like the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), the Aboriginal Coaching Module (ACM) and sport-specific coaches and officials training. Other development opportunities such as conferences, Sport Medicine and Science Professional Development Days and coach mentorship are also supported through ACOP.

Description

The Aboriginal Coaches and Officials Program began in 2007 to help eliminate some of the barriers for Aboriginal participants in sport as a coach and official. These barriers include: Awareness – There is a lack of awareness in the Aboriginal community surrounding the times when and locations where coaching and official clinics are occurring. This then leads to a reduced number of Aboriginal people becoming involved in coaching and officiating opportunities. To reduce this barrier ACOP comprises a seasonal list of all coaching and officiating opportunities occurring in the province and advertises this list to the Aboriginal community via e-mail, website, fax and Facebook. Economic Circumstance – This barrier speaks to the inability to afford the cost of registration for coaching and officiating clinics. To address this barrier the ACOP program offers the opportunity for Aboriginal people to take coaching and officiating clinics free of charge. Distance – Clinics are often held in urban centers which makes attending clinics difficult for Aboriginal people living in more rural settings. This is especially the case for those people living in Northern or isolated communities. In order to effectively address this barrier the program offers clinics in First Nations and Métis communities when possible. Jurisdiction – The responsibility for the administration of Sport Specific coaching and officiating clinics lies with the Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs). As such the number of sport specific clinics that are held in Aboriginal communities is the decision of the provincial body. At times it has proven challenging to acquire from the PSOs a clinic that will be held in an Aboriginal community. To combat this barrier the program has been working closely to enhance sport development relationships, informing them about the needs and encouraging them to deliver sport clinics to Aboriginal Communities.
