Headquartered in Sudbury, Ontario, the Advanced Medical Research Institute of Canada (AMRIC) sets a new stage in Canada for cutting edge research that explores the unknown and challenges conventional approaches. With a targeted approach to disease prevention and treatment, AMRIC aims to improve health care outcomes in Northern communities and across Canada. Research at AMRIC spans the full spectrum of related health science, from basic molecular biology and epidemiology, to clinical trials and the development of new therapies, to health services and knowledge translation research. AMRIC’s Key Objectives: • Build a strong research program that targets the key health concerns and priorities of the North and that enables enhanced access to funding opportunities for translational research; • Increase commercial uptake of innovative scientific and clinical advancements to ensure greater accessibility to residents of the Greater Sudbury Region • Develop sustainable infrastructure to meet current and future research needs; • Attract and retain nationwide leaders in translational health care research to the North AMRIC’s Research Priorities: • Clinical Research Integration – AMRIC researchers are contributing to comprehensive health care delivery processes in critical patient care areas such as: cancer care; cardiac care; frailty prevention in the elderly; and, hospital-acquired infection. • Translation to Commercial Application – Promising scientific ideas are carefully investigated for scientific and technical excellence and for potential market acceptance and value, and developed for commercial uptake or clinical application. AMRIC’s Research Programs: • Vaccine Development and Immunotherapy – is oriented towards combating chronic diseases and infectious diseases that are of special concern to residents of Northeastern Ontario. • Tumour Biology – was founded in 1996 as part of the Northeastern Cancer Centre and focuses on advancing the translation of basic research into clinical practice.
