The Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine (AITHM) is a newly-established tropical health and medical research institute based at James Cook University (JCU) with key nodes in Townsville, Cairns, the Torres Strait and Mackay. AITHM's programs will encompass public health, biomolecular, clinical, translational, and health systems research that is strongly focused on the health issues of most importance to tropical Australia, delivering significant public health benefit locally, regionally and globally. Through its research and innovation, and in partnership with key community organisations and health service providers, AITHM aims to fill a major gap that currently exists at the interface between cutting edge research and scientific expertise, and health service, workforce and policy delivery. What will AITHM deliver for northern Australia? Full establishment of AITHM as a world leader in tropical health, medical and biotechnology research and research training will enable AITHM to: Strengthen Australia’s health security Improve health outcomes in rural, remote, Indigenous and tropical Australia Improve occupational health in key industries such as mining and agriculture
