The Albury Local Area Command is situated in the southern part of New South Wales bordered in the East by the Snowy Mountains, the south by the Victorian Border, the western and northern area is farming and grazing. The Albury Local Area Command encompasses the Albury, Culcairn, Corowa, Henty, Holbrook, Howlong, Khancoban, Lake Hume, Mulwala, Oaklands, Rand, Tumbarumba, Walla Walla Police Stations and the Local Government Areas of Albury, Corowa , Culcairn, Holbrook, Hume, Tumbarumba, and Urana Shire Councils. Within the Albury, Wodonga and border region is a major tourist industry. Agriculture is the largest source of income with both cities and nearby region’s sites for national and multi nationally owned manufacturing and processing plants. The Australian Armed Forces also have barracks in nearby Wodonga. There are many factors unique to Albury Local Area Command with the regional population of Albury/Wodonga in excess of 109,000 persons. The LAC has a total of 250+ licensed premises. Sectors of Albury, Corowa and Mulwala have licensed premises remaining open as late as 5am, which attract significant numbers of patrons from Victoria. The Albury Local Area Command covers an area of over 14,783 square kilometres and is situated in the southern part of New South Wales. It is bordered in the east by the Snowy Mountains, the south by the Victorian Border, the western and northern area being farming and grazing land. It is comprised of 13 sectors with a total authorisation of 145 police. Albury Sector provides a 24 hour service and is a category "A" holding station for Albury and Deniliquin L.A.C.’s, requiring custody management. The L.A.C comprises, eight local government areas; Albury, Hume, Corowa, Culcairn, Holbrook, Tumbarumba and Urana Shires. The Federal electorate of Farrer is predominant across the L.A.C, with the state member for Albury electorate, Mr Greg Aplin. The Hume Freeway, Riverina Highway and Olympic Way pass through the Local Area Command. The airport at Albury is the 18th busiest in the nation handling 148,000 passengers per year, 66,000 aircraft movements per year with 695 regular passenger flights per week. It is on par with Hobart Airport. Seasonally, Rutherglen in Victoria has an influx of people during the grape picking season with Winery walkabouts which impact upon the clusters of Corowa and Mulwala. Water sports (boat races, sailing, ski races, etc) on Lake Hume and Lake Mulwala attract a large number of spectators as well as contestants. The Murray River attracts holiday makers from Melbourne and NSW. The Hume Highway is the main arterial route for the many visitors to the area. The winter months see an increase in tourism through the area accessing the nearby Victorian and N.S.W snowfields. INFRASTRUCTURE Infrastructure underpins economic activity and growth in a region and is fundamental to an efficient and effective economy. Albury has well developed infrastructure attracting regular and frequent numbers from nearby Wodonga and regional towns to the area. Entertainment venues such as the Cinema Centre, nightclubs, restaurants, Intencity, Convention Centre and Albury Performing Arts Centre attract visitors from regional areas. Albury Base Hospital is the largest hospital in the Albury, Wodonga and border region, receiving patients from surrounding Hospitals. Charles Sturt University, Murray Campus, based in Albury records about 1,500 internal student admissions a year. Police and the community working together to reduce violence, crime and fear.
