Creating Calgary's first organic, sustainable, large-scale school & community garden at Altadore School.

Description

The mission of our Altadore School Edible Garden is to engage our students, teachers and school community in a supported, sustainable, organic food garden and outdoor classroom that will teach essential life skills and support academic learning. Our Edible Garden will provide our students hands-on experience and understanding of how the natural world sustains them, and will promote environmental stewardship and the social well-being of our school community in the world at large. Our garden will provide students a unique environment for cross-curricular and hands-on, experiential learning in the core subjects of math, science, social studies, language, art and music, while simultaneously growing the next generation of environmental stewards. The garden will also provide both our students and greater community the opportunity to experience the values of inter-generational experiences; creating, learning and working together, where all will gain valuable first-hand experiences of community and sustainability through working together to grow food organically and sustainably. A unique combination of School and Community Garden, the Altadore School Edible Garden will be situated in a currently unused portion of the school yard, and will be comprised of one raised bed garden for each school class (14 minimum), a minimum corresponding number of community garden plots, 4 raised beds for the use of our local community Senior’s Group, a large 24’ x 48’ for-charity garden, two food forests, two herb spirals, berry beds, pollinator gardens, orchard, and 2 dedicated, partially sheltered outdoor classroom area. Individual class plots will provide each teacher and class an environment to plan, plant, maintain and harvest organic crops of their choice at a level of involvement that works best for each teacher and their desired learning outcomes. Each class plot will be paired with a community gardener who will be available to assist in maintenance during the school year and will maintain their corresponding class plot throughout the summer months. Additionally, all aspects of the garden will be fully supported by the Edible Garden Committee (currently a group of 6 parent volunteers), and will include a volunteer Garden Leader and two volunteer assistants. To enhance the sustainability and purpose of the Altadore School Edible Garden, we plan to include school-wide education and enrichment through expert assemblies, curriculum development, teacher development opportunities, student clubs (gardening, environmental, cooking, etc.), a gardening section added to the school library, a blog/website dedicated to the garden, community garden building and harvest events, and garden educational talks for the families of our students to bring the experience home!
