Australian Festival of Chamber Music

at , Townsville , 4810 Australia

The finest musicians gather in tropical Townsville for 9 days of stellar music making. The Australian Festival of Chamber Music North Queensland Ltd (AFCM) is an unlikely flourish in Australia’s cultural landscape. Established in 1991 by the then Vice Chancellor of James Cook University, Professor Ray Golding, the idea was to enhance the cultural environment of Townsville and North Queensland by presenting internationally acclaimed musicians to audiences from Townsville, Australia and overseas. The founding Artistic Director was viola player Theodore Kuchar and current Artistic Director, Piers Lane AO, only succeeded him in 2007 so the Festival has had great continuity of artistic purpose. Held annually in Townsville with approximately 30 to 40 chamber musicians presenting 30 concerts over a 10 day period the AFCM invites few pre-existing groups. It is ‘residential’ in that the works are all rehearsed and performed on site. Many of the artists are attracted to Townsville for the professional pleasure they get from playing with their peers in changing combinations and a wide variety of repertoire. Audiences are aware of the fact that these combinations are exclusive to the AFCM and on both sides of the stage an excitement and trust builds up over the 10 day period resulting in those memorable live performances that provide the transformative experience that is the beating heart of any expressive art form. Artists want to be invited back and the AFCM’s audience return rate is impressive. As audiences have grown each year since 1991 so has the Festival’s reputation for the quality of its artists and its innovative programming over a range of chamber music styles. In addition to the core concert series the Festival has a number of additional key components that focus on entertainment, education, community outreach and the environment. As part of the Festival’s commitment to the region concerts are also held in surrounding centres with past events taking place in Charters Towers, Mount Isa, Ayr, Karumba, Magnetic Island and Orpheus Island and Radical Bay.
