The Bannerman Park Foundation is a committee of citizens devoted to the revitalization of Bannerman Park and restoring it as a cherished city landmark for future generations.
In 2010, the Bannerman Park Foundation was established as a not-for-profit group of interested volunteers. Bannerman Park is approaching 150 years old. It is the oldest and most historic park in the province and has not seen any major investment for many years. Over time, the Park has lost many of the features that were special to Victorian parks and the master plan will redevelop Bannerman Park into a jewel in the heart of the city. Implementation of the plan depends on fundraising. The 150th anniversary of Governor Bannerman donating the land for the park to the people of St. John’s will take place in 2014. The Foundation’s goal is to finish the work by then and efforts will be on-going to raise the money for each different projects. Each piece of work will have its own budget, but overall, it is expected that the Foundation will have to raise $3 million. The City of St. John’s will match all funds raised dollar-for-dollar. The Foundation and its committees will work in close co-operation with community groups who use the Park, like the Folk Arts Council which endorses the master plan. The Foundation is working closely with St. John’s City Council to ensure the rejuvenation initiative supports a strong future for the festival, as well as other events.
