The Brampton Board of Trade has generated enterprise productivity and community prosperity for thousands of business and civic champions, since 1887. On June 3, 1887 the Brampton Conservator carried a small article referring to a meeting held at the Excelsior Hose Company rooms to consider the advisability of forming a Board of Trade. A committee was formed consisting of Kenneth Chisholm, T. Holtby, John Clarke, Manton Treadgold and Luther Cheyne. A further meeting was called for Tuesday June 14 at 8 p.m. in the Council Chambers, which at that time were situated on the second floor of the market and engine house on Chapel Street. At the second meeting Kenneth Chisholm was elected as the Board’s first President along with a full slate of officers. However, after officers were elected, the organization lapsed. By 1890, a new Board of Trade was formed with E.O. Runians, a local merchant, elected President. This new Board helped bring the Young Brothers foundry to Brampton in 1890 and secured a purchaser for the Haggert Brothers foundry when it went into liquidation in 1891. However, by 1897, this board too, ceased operations. The Board of Trade was again revived in 1903 and assisted by town council and the town’s local paper, The Conservator, took steps to ensure that Brampton's new industrial base would not be eroded. They encouraged new industries to locate in the town and build an infrastructure of urban services — philosophies still practiced by the Board of Trade today. The founding of the new Board of Trade marked the beginning of an era of business prosperity, transforming Brampton into a progressive town with hydroelectric power, a dependable water system, stores, good roads, a new library, and several new industries. During the 1920s, the Board was eclipsed by the Brampton Business Men's Association. Led by local merchants, the Association addressed matters affecting the old downtown commercial area, such as persuading the Town Council to regulate parking and establishing the first off-street parking lot. By 1931, the Association disbanded due to declining interest. During the two World Wars, The Brampton Board of Trade remained dormant. In 1947, the organization was renewed, and called itself the Brampton Chamber of Commerce, which was inaugurated with the help of the Lion’s Club. The young organization promoted civic, commercial, industrial and agricultural progress, co-operating with Council to attract new industry to Brampton. Its first office was opened in 1958 in space shared with the Brampton Real Estate Board on George Street. Two years later, the organization hired a full-time secretary and moved to its own office on Main Street South. The Council and Chamber of Commerce found a solution to the town’s parking problem: the three main lots still in use today were laid out. The Chamber’s retail section concentrated on improving the downtown area's economic health resulting in sales forums for merchants, standardization of store hours, and other reforms. In 1964, in an effort to heighten the Chamber’s appeal to the growing Bramalea area, it became known as the Brampton and District Chamber of Commerce. By September 1972, the Board was able to hire its first full-time manager. In December 1973, the Board began to operate the Motor Vehicle License Issuing Office (originally located in the Bramalea City Centre, and now located at 2150 Steeles Ave. West). By 1975, after a preference had become apparent among the members for the original term "Board of Trade," the Chamber officially changed its name back to The Brampton Board of Trade, and relocated to the old Carnegie Library at 55 Queen Street East. Still a comparatively small group comprising approximately 300 members, the Board at this time had not reached the large new industries that had moved into Brampton since late 1950s. In the mid-1980s, the Board underwent a reorganization of its entire structure. During the next decade, a committee system was initiated to assist running events and writing policy -- a system which is still successfully in use today. The membership base grew — not only from a numbers perspective, but also across the wide spectrum of business sectors. In November 1990, the Board moved to a new facility at the terminal building, 8 Nelson Street West. In mid-1999, the Board of Trade moved to 33 Queen St. West, Second Floor, successfully sharing the building with its downstairs neighbours, the Brampton Economic Development Office, the Small Business Enterprise Centre and the Brampton Downtown Development Corporation. In 2010, the Board moved once again to its current location, 36 Queen St. E., also known as the Goodison Building. The Brampton Board of Trade has continually and successfully evolved to be a progressive and relevant organization. It is indeed The Voice of Business for Business.
