Brisbane Memorial Care & Repair was started when owner/operator Mandy Cotman saw a need to have a specialist business caring for memorials and graves in Brisbane cemeteries, as general memorial mason companies are focussing on the larger industry of new grave construction. Mandy felt that she could bring a high level of care and attention to restoration work, and was trained by master stonemason and partner Pete Macfarlane. Over time, she has developed a wide range of skills and approaches to ensure the best outcome for each restoration. Every grave is visited and quoted on individually, with options given to the clients and recommendations as to the best approach within scope of budget. Mandy has a background in laboratory work and thus has a fine eye for detail as well as excellent organisational and communication skills, and a genuine empathy with clients. She has a keen interest in memorial history and visits cemeteries around the world whenever she travels, to see new approaches and learn about historical techniques. Mandy also works with Pete Macfarlane during design and construction of his unique new cemetery projects, and thus understands both the construction process and how memorials are put together. This in turn gives a better understanding of how older memorials were constructed and what can be best done to preserve them. Materials and techniques should be sympathetic to the age of the memorial where possible, as both Mandy and Pete abide by the Australian Burra Charter of conservation of historical sites. Mandy feels this is far more than just a job; it is a wonderful chance to be involved in preserving Australian history. She has worked on projects from Biloela to Beaudesert, for clients ranging from mining companies to the Qld Police to pensioners. She understands that most people have financial limitations and so works with every client to provide the best improvements possible within their budget.
