Aikikai style Aikido
Budoka Aikikai has operated from the Sudbury YMCA since 2001. The head instructors are sensei Guy Pharand (sandan), and sensei Darren Evoy (nidan). The physical side of Aikido involves joint manipulation, projections (throws), and ukemi (taking a fall). We work with our partners energy, redirecting it, and controlling it. The mental side involves developing a "beginners mind", focus, and intention. If your mind is not calm, your techniques won't be either. Students must be members of the YMCA, which also provides them with access to the full facility. Please see the Sudbury YMCA website for their fee schedules. The only additional charge is a yearly $35 membership fee payable to the USAF (United States Aikido Federation). Beginners are welcome, please wear loose clothing that permits free movement. Jogging pants and a t-shirt are more than adequate. We sell uniforms to those interested in staying, but students are free to purchase a uniform wherever they like.
