What do we do? The NFA promotes shooting excellence with three long-term shooting scholarships that support athletes in reaching excellence. Megan Heinicke (Tandy) was the top-rated female Canadian biathlete at the 2010 winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. She and Sarah Beuadry are both on the canadian Olympic team for Biathlon in 2018. Rob Engh is an IPSC shooter who carries the banner of Canada and the NFA worldwide. The NFA provides advice and help to firearms community members who through no fault of their own have run afoul of Canada’s tortuous, convoluted and unnecessary firearms laws. We have provided case law, contacted police on behalf of firearms owners, and helped to get charges dropped by carefully explaining the complexities of the law. When legal problems are more difficult to resolve, we have helped people locate knowledgeable legal help. While we generally do not fund individual court cases (there are simply too many and they are all very expensive), we will sometimes take cases forward or assist with donations in matters that have the potential of widespread affect. We have solicited legal opinions on matters affecting firearm ownership and use, and we cultivate strong relationships with the legal community of pro-firearms lawyers. The NFA has provided help to clubs on design issues and problems with ranges, interactions with firearms officers, and on issues relating to range operations. We offer an excellent primary, comprehensive Director’s and liability insurance program for clubs and members. We challenge those who would take away our rights and property in public forums and in the media. We connect with politicians and advocate for firearms owners’ rights. NFA representatives lobbied and had an instrumental role in helping to end the wasteful and contentious long gun registry, though we have certainly sought much more than that. We are working hard to preserve our right to enjoy to use and enjoy firearms. Make no mistake about it, the U.N. is working toward total, world-wide civilian disarmament through such actions as the Arms Trade Treaty. That’s right; the U.N. wants to ban your guns. We are also a founding member of IAPCAR, the International Association for the Protection of Civilian Arms Rights. We participate in international meeting with like-minded organizations from other countries to exchange ideas and to advocate for better circumstance for the firearms community. What do we want? NFA members were present at the Conservative party’s June policy convention to present out goals and distribute information. This is what the party was told that firearms owners want to achieve: Ø Completely repeal the former bills C-17 and C-68, known as the Firearms Act—including scrapping the firearms registry, firearms licenses, and destroying the records. Ø Eliminate firearm licences and the requirement to take any sort of course to own one’s own property; ordinary firearms owners are not a threat to public safety, violent criminals are. Skills courses such as Hunter Training are fine, but the CFSC is not really a skills course. Ø Eliminate the automatic check of legal firearms owners when a person is stopped for a traffic offence and replace it with an instant check of criminal/parole/probation records; hunters and target shooters are not a threat to public safety - violent criminals are. Ø Replace the licensing and registration provisions with a point of purchase instant criminal record check for firearms. This system would keep legal access to firearms away from criminal elements by making use of a practical list of people who should not have firearms, rather than by trying to make lists of those who may. Ø Renounce the agreement to implement the UN marking regulations (Firearm Markings Regulation SOR 2004-275) that was passed in 2004. Ø Cancel the introduction of the proposed new gun show regulations. Ø Curtail the RCMP's attempts to unilaterally reclassify firearms. Ø End prohibitions on magazine capacity. Ø Restore handgun hunting as a legitimate use of a handgun. Ø Eliminate punitive safe storage and transport requirements that have caused much grief to firearm owners in the absence of any wrongdoing. Ø Remove the category of prohibited from firearms ownership so as to allow free exchange of property. The arbitrary nature of the prohibited class is a great affront to ordinary citizens who happen to own these firearms. It is also a means of stealing their property from them as many prohibited category firearms may not be passed on to heirs, or readily sold at their fair market value. If there is to be a "restricted category", then it must have broader reasons for use, which should allow combined reasons for ownership and use, and it must include at least hunting and self-defence along with the other categories. Ø Encourage support for recreational and competitive shooting sports so as to eliminate the negative stigma created by this regressive legislation.
