A non-profit organization in Regina, Sk. Offers emergency services and long-term supports to end the chronic experiences of poverty and homelessness. Carmichael Outreach is a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization providing Regina's core surrounding area with everything from clothing, food and household goods to harm reduction services, health education and counseling referrals. No fees are ever charged, our door is open to whoever needs our assistance and everyone is treated with respect and dignity. We offer a number of different services in order to help those who need it. These include: 1. Needle Exchange Program - Carmichael Outreach hosts one of the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region’s needle exchanges. The program is of great importance as the spread of both Hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS in Saskatchewan is steeply on the rise and largely driven by the sharing of dirty needles. Carmichael Outreach continues to play an important role in education about needle drugs use and the proper disposal of dirty needles. Last year we exchanged over 625,000 needles. We look forward to being a prominent intake to the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region’s new Detox Centre when it opens in March of 2010. 2. Food Recovery Program - Carmichael accepts personal and corporate donations of both prepared and non-perishable food items from in and around Regina. With the help of our many volunteers we are able to prepare this food to be given out to individuals and families in need. In 2009 we were able to hire a full time staff position to help manage this program. Through seeking new partner organizations and better organizing our volunteers we have been able to consistently save and serve between 300 and 500 meals a week for the latter half of 2009. We served a total of 14,441 meals over the course of the year, most of which was food that was other wise headed to the garbage. Our major partners include: The Paul Dojack Youth Detention Centre, The Conexus Arts Centre, Western Prebake, and The Canada Life Building. With the help of our new staff, it is our goal to have the capacity to serve 120 meals a day at Carmichael through 2010. That’s a total of over 30,000 meals over the course of the year. 3. Condom Distribution – This program is run in conjunction with the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region. We keep a container full of condoms in the outer office and dispense an average of 100 condoms per day. 4. Children’s’ Needs – When the resources are available we stock basic children’s needs such as diapers, milk, formula, and wipes to give away to parents and children in our community. With the help of many personal donations and a grant from the Access Communications Children’s’ Fund we were able to dispense over $6637.00 worth of baby needs in 2009. We have reapplied for the same grant in 2010. 5. On-site Nurse - A nurse from the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region is on site to offer minor services, including blood and bandage work, every Thursday afternoon. The program has been well received and continues to grow in popularity. 6. Immunization Program – In 2009 we hosted a series of immunization clinics in partnership with the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region for both regular flu vaccines and the H1N1 virus. Carmichael is of special interest to the Health Region because we serve a community that is at high risk of contracting infectious diseases and because many in our community are not likely to seek help elsewhere. 7. Coffee Room – Carmichael provides a coffee room for clients to come and meet with their neighbours. Every morning we put up 80 -100 cups of coffee and some snacks when we have them. Between 100 – 200 people a day make use of the coffee room at Carmichael on a daily basis. 8. Hair Cuts – We’ve started to invite local hairdressers to come to Carmichael and offer free hair cuts on a monthly basis. 9. Referrals – As part of a network of service providers across the city, it is very important for us to form and maintain partnerships with other organizations around the city. Along with the above-mentioned partnerships with the Regina Food Bank, and the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region, we also regularly refer people to the follow agencies: The Regina Anti Poverty Ministry; The Blue Mantle; Sleep Country (Mattress Referral Program); Rainbow Youth Centre; Mobile Crisis; Welfare Rights; Souls Harbour Rescue Mission; Visitation House; The Marion Centre; Others as the need arises.
