Ballarat City ist ein lokales Verwaltungsgebiet (LGA) im australischen Bundesstaat Victoria um die Stadt Ballarat. Das Gebiet ist 740 km² groß und hat etwa 93.500 Einwohner.Ballarat liegt etwa 120 km westlich der Hauptstadt Melbourne im Zentrum von Victoria und schließt folgende Ortschaften ein: Coghills Creek, Ascot, Learmonth, Miners Rest, Burrumbeet, Cardigan, Ballarat, Nerrina, Mount Clear, Mount Helen, Wendouree, Alfredton, Delacombe, Brown Hill, Sebastopol und Buninyong. Der Sitz des City Councils befindet sich in der Stadt Ballarat in der Mitte der LGA mit etwa 86.000 Einwohnern.Ballarat ist die drittgrößte Stadt Victorias und eine der größten Inlandsstädte Australiens. Sie verdankt ihre Größe zum einen dem Goldrausch Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts, zum anderen der verkehrsgünstigen Lage zur Metropole Melbourne. Neben der Industrie in der Stadt gibt es auch einige Landwirtschaft im Umland, vor allem Getreideanbau und Viehzucht.Die Goldgräbervergangenheit macht das Gebiet um Ballarat zu einem beliebten Touristenziel, mehr als ein Viertel aller Goldfunde im Bundesstaat Victoria stammte von hier. In Buninyong, wo 1851 das erste Gold entdeckt wurde, und anderen Orten gibt es speziell restaurierte Goldgräbersiedlungen und Minenanlagen zu besichtigen. Der Reichtum von Ballarat hat auch ein sehenswertes, viktorianisches Stadtbild hinterlassen. Eine weitere Attraktion ist der innerstädtische Lake Wendouree, auf dem 1956 die olympischen Ruderwettbewerbe ausgetragen wurden.VerwaltungDer Ballarat City Council hat neun Mitglieder, die von den Bewohnern der neun Wards gewählt werden. Fünf dieser Bezirke, Wendouree, Alfredton, Caledonian, Canadian und Central Ward liegen im Bereich von Ballarat, die übrigen vier sind Learmonth, Sebastopol, Nerrina und Buninyong. Aus dem Kreis der Councillor rekrutiert sich auch der Mayor (Bürgermeister) des Councils.

The Borough of Sebastopol was a local government area about 4km south of the regional city of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. The borough covered an area of 7.61km2, and existed from 1864 until 1994.Sebastopol was incorporated as a borough on 1 October 1864. On 6 May 1994, the Borough of Sebastopol was abolished, and, along with the City of Ballaarat, the Shire of Ballarat, and parts of the Shires of Bungaree, Buninyong, Grenville and Ripon, was merged into the newly created City of Ballarat.Population Estimate in the 1958 Victorian Year Book.

The City of Ballaarat was a local government area covering the inner suburbs of the regional city of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. The city covered an area of, and existed from 1855 until 1994.HistoryThe spelling of the name was a source of constant confusion. It originated from two Aboriginal words "balla arat", meaning "resting place". The municipality used the spelling Ballaarat as part of its corporate description, but the town itself came to be known as Ballarat.Ballaarat originated in two boroughs, incorporated two years apart; the Borough of Ballaarat was first incorporated on 10 December 1855, and became a town on 10 October 1863 and a city on 9 September 1870. The Borough of Ballaarat East, meanwhile, came into being on 1 May 1857 and became a town on 23 August 1872. It was divided into North, Central and South wards in 1889. On 25 May 1921, the town merged into Ballaarat, which was redivided into four wards. On 2 April 1930, the combined entity absorbed part of the Shire of Bungaree.On 6 May 1994, the City of Ballaarat was abolished, and, along with Borough of Sebastopol, the Shire of Ballarat and parts of the Shires of Bungaree, Buninyong, Grenville and Ripon, was merged into the newly created City of Ballarat.
