The Colorado Haiti Project works in partnership with rural Haitian communities to support their rise out of extreme poverty.
Community Health: The CHP supports the Haitian Ministry of Health (MSPP) to develop a sustainable primary health care system for the Nippes Department. Through a 2013 Memorandum of Understanding, the CHP has facilitated the creation of a local community health council to identify and take leadership on community health priorities. We support salaries of Haitian doctors and other health workers. We have upgraded the existing public health clinic and eventually plan the construction of a new clinic building. Education: We offer Pre-K to grade 10 education to 700 day students from the communities around Petit Trou de Nippes. St. Paul’s is recognized as one of the best school in the Haitian Southern Peninsula. Education opportunities are vital to the long-term success of this community, and young people who learned to read twenty years ago when St. Paul's School was founded are not becoming next-generation community leaders. Water: CHP received a grant to drill wells, and the wells have now operated for seven years, allowing clean water access within ten minutes to all families in our primary school service area. Clean water has contributed to low cholera rates in the region and to the reduction of water-borne illnesses. Trained community mechanics keep the wells operating successfully. Vocational Training: Economic self-sufficiency has long been a goal of this community. Colorado and Haitian vocational personnel are working with community members to develop and sustain a comprehensive vocational school to bring additional skills and economic stability to the area. Current local programs focus on sewing/tailoring and agriculture. Scholarship students are in other communities seeking credentials in plumbing, electrical work, accounting and teaching.
