COTC is a serious and competitive athletic club for people interested in realizing their full potential in the sport of track and field.

Description

The goal of the Calgary Olympic Track Club is to provide access to a convenient and affordable program of high quality training and competitive experience in Track and Field. COTC is a non-profit organization, run by volunteers, and registered under the Societies Act of Alberta. It is affiliated with Athletics Alberta and Athletics Canada, the governing bodies for track and field in Alberta and Canada, respectively. COTC operates in accordance with its bylaws and is managed by a Board of Directors elected each year at an Annual General Meeting.

General Info

The Calgary Olympic Track Club was founded in 2002 for six elementary school children who loved to run but had no convenient access to the established clubs in Calgary. From the beginning, the focus was on very intense, high quality training, which led to immediate success in competition. The club has never advertised, nor actively recruited athletes, but grew quickly through word of mouth. By 2004, there were 25 athletes involved, and 30 by 2008. At that point, organizers felt the club was losing the low athlete-to-coach ratio and family-oriented feeling that made it unique, so a decision was taken to limit athlete numbers to a maximum of 22. The club now accepts athletes of all abilities over ten years old, but only those who are highly motivated, committed to the sport, and willing to work hard to reach their full athletic potential. In rare cases, younger athletes are accepted if they demonstrate exceptional maturity and work ethic. COTC is now recognized and respected in the track and field community, not only in Calgary, but also throughout Alberta and across the country. The club has produced many provincial champions, and has been sending athletes to national and international events since 2005.
