Description

As Sisters of St. Joseph “we seek to nurture community with our neighbour, especially with the homeless, the alienated, the economically poor….” Our neighbours are the people who have had to flee their country – the refugees who are homeless, alienated, and poor. We hear their cry for justice and we respond. “We respond in collaboration with others … to create a society transformed by the values of the Gospel by which the dignity and freedom of every person is experienced and affirmed.” Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto, Constitutions # 45 Pope Francis, during his recent visit to the US, said the solution to the refugee crisis is for countries to follow the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." He went on to call for people to see refugees and other immigrants as human beings in need of compassion. Francis said: “We need to view them as persons, seeing their faces and listening to their stories, trying to respond as best we can to their situation, to respond in a way which is always humane, just, and inclusive”. In response to this call, we want to sponsor two families through Project Hope, operated by the Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto. The Toronto Archdiocese has sponsored many refugee families and provides support as needed. We would like to invite sisters, associates, and staff to collaborate with us as we reach out in compassion in response to the plight of refugees. With all of us working together, we can assist in this small way the 25,000 refugees our government has promised to welcome into Canada.
