Concurrent Enrollment: Smoothing The Path To College Across Colorado, more than 6,000 high school students are enrolled in free college courses. At West, enrollment in college courses is steadily increasing, creating more opportunities for our students to be successful in college after graduation. In Colorado, state authorized concurrent enrollment programs allow high school students to take college classes, paid for by the school district, helping them get on track for a successful college career before graduation. Thanks to its location, students at West have a unique opportunity to take courses for several colleges and technical schools. From the University of Colorado, Denver to CEC Middle College, West Cowboys have a variety of concurrent enrollment options. During the Fall semester, seven classes were offered for concurrent enrollment including Ethnic Studies, Chicano Studies, Criminal Justice, Public Speaking, College Algebra and Introduction to Computer Applications. More than 300 students have taken advantage of this free opportunity to earn college credit. Combined, they completed more than 1,000 hours of college credit for free before even graduating from high school. A Colorado state education department report found that 28.6 percent of high school students entering universities and college needed remedial courses. By enrolling in college courses early, West students are setting themselves apart from their peers and will be better equipped to meet the challenges of post-secondary education. To help students complete their work and utilize online tools related to courses, West offers a laptop-lending program. Students enrolled in college courses may check out a laptop for 48 hours. This program has been very successful with a large number of students checking out computers and is looking into ways to make more available for students. If your child is enrolled in college courses, please remind them that attendance is critical to their grade and overall success. At the college level, students are expected to manage their own time and schedules. By learning these skills now, your child will have a much easier time when entering college full time. Continue lack of attendance can impact grades significantly. Next semester we look forward to enrolling even more students in college level courses, as well as provide more options for tutoring to keep everyone on track.
