In 1922 the Art Center Music School was first established, and is presently Detroit’s oldest ongoing school of music, whose mission is to provide quality music instruction to low and moderate income families at affordable rates. Musicians formally involved with the school include Bernhard Heiden ,Opera stars George Shirley and Kathleen Battle, World renowned pianist Ruth Laredo and Hugh Downs the Emmy-Award -winning co-news anchor of the ABC NEWS show 20/20 and inductee into the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame broadcasters. In 1952, the Art Center School president, Dr. Amos Ebersole and spouse Dr. Nellie Ebersole, purchased the school. Upon Dr. Nellie Ebersole's death in 1991, her estate assigned the Board of Directors of the Art Center Music School as its beneficiary with providing a superior level of training in the arts, for the students.
