WELCOME OUR NEWEST STAFF MEMBER! *~*MRS.RONDA CUNNINGHAM-BALLET*~* Ronda Cunningham was born in the prairies – in the small town of Lamont, Alberta. She trained at Canada's National Ballet School, Toronto from the age of 8 to 19 years, under the direction of Betty Oliphant. She entered the National Ballet of Canada in 1984 under the direction of Erik Bruhn and was quickly promoted to the rank of Soloist. Soon-after, she was invited to join the Deutsche Opera in Berlin, under the direction of Gert Reinholm and a year later, she was personally invited by Maurice Bejart to work with him in Lausanne, Switzerland as a Principal Ballerina. Her repertory includes all the Major Classical Ballets, including Principal Roles in The Nutcraker, La Fille Mal Gardee, Giselle, Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet and Les Sylphides, as well as leading roles in several ballets by the immortal George Balanchine, Sir Kennith MacMillan, Maurice Bejart and John Cranko. She has received critical acclaim throughout the world as she graced the stages of the most prestigious theaters worldwide performing with The National Ballet of Canada (“New York Times” for her “outstanding” performance in Glen Tetley's “La Ronde”); Deutsche Opera Berlin and Ballet Bejart Lausanne (in both companies for her portrayal of “Elue” in Maurice Bejart's “The Rite of Spring”), Alberta Ballet (for her portrayal of “Siren” in George Balanchine's “The Prodigal Son”) and Veronica Tennant Productions (for dancing in film). While at the National Ballet School in Canada, she was featured in Flamenco at 5:15 directed by Cynthia Scott which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary. She has created two original roles in dance films, directed and produced by Veronica Tennant C.C: “TRIO” (Gemini Award for best cinematography) and “Northern Light: Visions and Dreams.” Celebrated as exceptionally versatile and internationally known as a choreographer's “Muse”, Ronda has enjoyed fruitful collaborations with a roster of illustrious choreographers, working with or having roles created especially for her by such renowned choreographers as Hans Van Mannen, Rudi Van Danzig, Jiri Kylian, William Forsythe, Glen Tetley, Maurice Bejart, John Alleyne, Dominique Dumais, Mark Godden, Veronica Tennant and David Nixon. Mrs. Cunningham is privileged to have danced on the stage with Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Erik Bruhn, Maurice Bejart, Fernando Bujones, Rex Harrington, Frank Augustyn, John Alleyne, Jorge Donn, Gil Roman, Kevin Hagen, Nacho Duato, Peter Shauffus and Julio Arozarena. Returning home to Alberta, Canada, Ronda joined the Alberta Ballet, under the direction of Mikko Nissinen, dancing with them in existing and newly created repertoire. In 2000-2001, she was commissioned by Alberta Ballet to choreograph for the Festival of New Works. In the creation of her first ballet, “Virtues & Vices”, she was responsible for the music and choreography, costume and set design, a cast of 26 dancers, including Mikko Nissinen and sound text written and recorded especially for her by Veronica Tennant C.C. Ronda taught ballet extensively in Alberta for 4 years. Then, returning home to Toronto, Ronda was a Guest Artist with the National Ballet of Canada, Ballet Jorgen and Veronica Tennant Productions; she continued to teach and mentor aspiring young dancers. Among her honours and awards, she is a recipient of a Canada Council Grant (which enabled her to study with the most prestigious Ballet Schools and Companies in Europe) and The Peter Dwyer Award of Excellence. At the University of Toronto, Toronto School of Theology, Mrs. Cunningham received her Master of Divinity and soon after, she was selected as one of “20 up-and-coming Women in Toronto” by “The Catherine The Great Society” of the Art Gallery of Ontario, where she danced among the paintings of Emily Carr. Ronda is passionate about offering her love in Dance and in this, she is propelled by teaching and choreographing for professionals and students. Ronda is thrilled to join our staff and eager to share her passion and knowledge with the students of District Dance Company.
