Private practice OT serving children and families in St. John's, Newfoundland, and surrounding area. For parents seeking help for children with autism, ADHD, sensory processing, learning disabilities, etc.
I am pleased and excited to offer a private practice Occupational Therapy service for children in St. John’s and the surrounding area as of October, 2013. Here in Newfoundlland and Labrador, we are all aware of the long wait lists for Occupational Therapy service in the public health sector. There is a continuing and pressing need for early assessment and intervention for autism and other developmental conditions of childhood. Private Occupational Therapy offers an alternative for some parents. Now with more health insurers covering services such as Occupational Therapy, there is also gradually improved access for more families. Donna's Bio: With over 20 years experience in paediatric Occupational Therapy, my work with children and families has spanned both public and private sector health and education. Here in Newfoundland and Labrador, that has included being part of the Janeway’s Child Development and Learning Service, often working with schools and ABA staff to set up individual programs for children. Living in New Zealand from 2001 to 2011, my work included School Therapy Consulting as well as Child Development home visiting. I am registered with the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists and the Newfoundland and Labrador Occupational Therapy Board (see websites). Who are the kids that may need OT?: Any child with difficulties performing tasks required for home or school are possible candidates for Occupational Therapy service. These may include children with autism spectrum disorders, sensory-processing difficulties, fine motor or printing difficulties, ADHD, developmental delays, Down syndrome, behavioural or learning problems, gross motor incoordination, etc. The OT Process: Generally, the process includes an initial home visit interview with one or both parents, a second visit for assessment/screening with the child, followed by a parent/therapist discussion of assessment results and a decision made together about the need and process for continued therapy. School involvement including school visits may be recommended. Fees: Hourly rates for service are as recommended by NLAOT (see website www.nlaot.ca FAQ) presently $105 hr as of Jan 2014. A small fee per km for travel is also charged. (In Newfoundland and Labrador the Desjardins Insurance company is one insurer who covers Occupational Therapy service.) I am happy to discuss options to meet your child and family’s needs re programming and scheduling. Look forward to hearing from you and meeting you and your child.
