Durham Outlook supports people experiencing the immediate needs, ongoing effects, and underlying causes of poverty and food insecurity. Founded in 1990, Durham Outlook has been addressing the needs of poverty and food insecurity for 25 years. Currently, Durham Outlook has two main program streams: St. Vincent Pallotti's Kitchen: With the leadership of more than 900 volunteers per month, the Kitchen serves an average of 130 patrons per day, 50,000 meals a year. St. Vincent Pallotti's Kitchen is Durham Region's only seven-day-a-week, 365-day-a-year soup kitchen. The Food Distribution Program: For more than 15 years, Durham Outlook has been leveraging its relationships with local businesses to procure and distribute food items on a daily basis for use in St. Vincent Pallotti's Kitchen, other non-profit agencies and schools. Our food distribution network has grown to serving more than 45 Durham Region-based partners.
In the spring of 2015, Durham Outlook purchased property at 227 Simcoe Street South in Oshawa - the future site of the new Durham Outlook Hub. The new Hub will be the only organization in Durham Region addressing the immediate needs, ongoing effects, and underlying causes of poverty and food insecurity under one roof. The new Durham Outlook Hub will be a fully accessible and barrier-free space. Durham Outlook has outgrown its current facility at 51 King St. East in Oshawa. St. Vincent Pallotti's Kitchen is currently located in a basement, preventing people with physical disabilities to access the soup kitchen. The new Hub will change that, ensuring no one is left behind. Projections show a 30% increase in patronage once the new accessible site is built. The Durham Outlook Hub will house four program streams: St. Vincent Pallotti's Kitchen - Durham Region's only 365-day-a-year soup kitchen. Community Chest - a needs bank that will provide essential clothing and toiletry items free of charge to individuals and families in need. Food Distribution Program - a food distribution network of more than 45 businesses, non-profits and schools. The Support Centre - an on-going series of programs and services, provided by partner non-profit agencies, that address the ongoing effects and underlying causes of poverty and food insecurity. Programs such as mental health and addiction support groups, housing navigation, pre-employment workshops, diabetes clinics and more. On November 16, 2015, Durham Outlook launched a $3 million dollar campaign to build its new 6,000 square foot facility and expand its programming. Building for the new Hub will commence in spring 2016 and finish in fall 2016. Our Mission: Durham Outlook, a community-based organization, supports people experiencing the immediate needs, ongoing effects, and underlying causes of poverty and food insecurity. We do this with business and non-profit partners, believing that through human kindness and compassion, we can improve the well-being of our patrons, reduce the impact of poverty, and create a culture of dignity and respect. Our Values: -Compassion and love -Kindness -Respect -Dignity
