The Eye Bank of British Columbia's mission is to decrease the waiting list for corneal transplant and provide families with the opportunity to donate their loved one's eyes, thereby giving the gift of sight through transplant, education and research.
The Eye Bank of B.C. is a not-for-profit organization within Vancouver Coastal Health. In 1983 the EBBC was established as the provincial referral centre to deal with British Columbia's needs for ocular tissue for transplant, research and education. Through the eye bank families are offered the opportunity to donate their loved one's eyes. This immeasurable gift from a single donor can restore sight to up to two people who are currently blind. BECOME AND EYE AND ORGAN DONOR: To register to be a donor please go to: www.bctransplant.bc.ca Remember to share your wishes regarding organ and eye donation with your family and friends. Donations: To support the Eye Bank of B.C. through financial donations please go to the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation at: Phone: 604-875-4676 Online: www.worldclasshealthcare.ca (To choose the eye bank as the recipient please choose 'eye bank' from the drop down list.) Currently the Eye Bank is raising money for an 'Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Machine'. This machine uses the latest technology to measure the thickness of a cornea utilizing light. The accuracy of this machine will allow the eye bank technicians to more accurately measure and therefore process the cornea for transplant.
