GDF was founded in 2013, after that year's HIV Wellness Retreat, by Justin Flowers, Chuck Courtney and Shana Cozad. Earlier that year, it had been revealed that the retreat's long-time sponsor, Community of Hope UCC, was unable to hold the it again that year. Mr Flowers had decided to take on the responsibility of raising funds himself, which is when he approached Ms Cozad and Mr Courtney to help secure the funds. Several fundraisers were held at local bars and restaurants until the target goal had been achieved. July 2013, their grassroots effort paid off and the first ever independently-funded HIV Wellness Retreat was a huge success! We held the retreat at Sky Ranch Cave Springs in Quapaw, OK. Attendees included twenty-six (26) persons living with or affected by HIV, five (5) special guest speakers, and a three (3) person staff, consisting of Mr Flowers, Ms Cozad, and Mr Courtney. At the Wellness Retreat, we surveyed attendees about missing services in the Tulsa-area HIV/AIDS Wellness Community. The overwhelming answer was free or low-cost transportation to meet their unique needs, as well as the annual HIV Wellness Retreat.
