Greater Davis Chapel COGIC was established in 1916 under the leadership of Elder W. M. Davis and wife Sis. Bertha Davis. For the first years, services were held in houses and under tents, but As the lord began to add faithful souls to the church it was evident that God had ordained this ministry and later two lots on the corner of State and Grant St were purchased. On this property a little shotgun church was built where the power of the Holy Ghost moved and dwelled. During the time the church was located here the following pastors were appointed to the church, Elder C. C. Cox, Elder Murphy, Elder Daniels, Elder Hollins, Elder Burleson, Elder Fields, and our last Pastor Elder Alvin Reeves Jr. and wife Sis. Fannie Reeves. In the beginning the church would be packed and there would be people standing all around on the outside coming to see the manifestation of God’s power in that “little holiness church on the west end”. There are memories of how the streets were mud streets and when it would rain you couldn’t drive your car to the church, you would have to leave your car on the highway and walk down the street, and how When the wind blew the old building would lean to the north and to the south but the Lord would not let it fall on us. But even in the midst of that the saints were “happy-glad” to make it to where the table was spread and the feast of the Lord was going on. After building and adding on to the church for 45 or 50 years, Elder Reeves had a vision of the church moving from the west side to the east side, but the members, being content didn’t want to move. But, after much prayer the church then moved to 821 E. Miller Road, under the leadership of Elder Alvin Reeves Jr. In 1992 Elder Tommy L. Chalk Sr. worked close beside Elder Alvin Reeves Jr. to restore the fellowship hall, pave the parking lot, install air conditioning and central heating, add new roofs and new pews. In November of 1997 Bishop appointed Elder Chalk Pastor of Greater Davis Chapel, and under his leadership the church began to expand. Pastor Chalk’s vision was to move his members to a building large enough to house God’s people and where the children wouldn’t have to walk in the rain to go to their classrooms. After much prayer a lot of land was purchased to build a new church, but God had a different plan. The land that we believed God had given us to build on was instead an investment, and a larger building located at 716 Chandler Dr., where we now reside was purchased. Here God has continued to bless us and show us that no matter the storm, what God has ordained CANNOT and WILL NOT be stopped.
