Description

Over the past several years we have become increasingly aware of the lack of housing for caregivers (defined for this project as family members and friends) of hospitalized patients in Central Massachusetts. This is especially apparent in the greater Worcester area. Worcester hospitals and other health care facilities offer care to over 63,000 admissions annually. Of those, a significant number of them are hospitalized for overnight stays that range from one night to several nights or even months. A proportion of these patients are from outlying areas in the Central Massachusetts region as are their caregivers. Due to the nature and extent of some hospitalized patient’s illness, caregivers are required to stay within close proximity of the hospital. They may be required to stay overnight, or often, a week or more at a time. In those instances, they must find accommodations that are accessible and affordable. For some, this adds to their stress as they may not be able to find accommodations that they can afford. Consequently, they must trek back-and-forth from home to the hospital. This necessitates the expense of transportation, creates fatigue, increases stress and takes away from energy and care that they would be able to provide if they were free from these burdens. Still others may find it difficult to cover housing and travel costs, thus they may not be able to provide care and nurturing to their loved one when it is most needed. A hospitality house for these caregivers will significantly decrease these burdens. We have conducted an informal assessment of housing availability for caregivers of hospitalized patients in Worcester hospitals. Our assessment revealed that there are only two hospitality houses in Worcester – The Hope Lodge and Sherry’s House. These facilities can accommodate only a small segment of the afore-mentioned population due to space/availability or because they provide services only to caregivers of hospitalized patients who have cancer. The new house will accommodate all caregivers regardless of the illness or injury that the hospitalized patient presents and increase the number of rooms in the area that are available to them. Both houses are supportive of a new facility and view it as a positive, much needed addition in the Worcester

General Info

Our underlying mission will be to provide support that enhances the mental, emotional, and social well-being of caregivers, and synergistically to the hospitalized patient via the caregiver. Balanced mental and emotional health aids in acquiring and maintaining the physical health and well-being of the individual.

For more information or to contact BFC to request a Binkeez blanket, please go to our website http://www.binkeezforcomfort.org STORY OF COMFORT Sue and her mother, Lynne, have been making blankets for many years. Creativity, imagination and innovation have always been an integral part of the spirit in making these blankets. This spirit also contains the memory of Lynne’s mother, and Susan’s grandmother, who started this family tradition as being a seamstress during WWII and throughout her life. Babies and children are also an integral part of the spirit in making these blankets. Aside from the memories of Lynne’s own children snuggling with their blankets at bedtime, naptime and when traveling, blankets have always conveyed a universal language of comfort. Over the years they used to personally donate these blankets to those who have not been given the gift of good health to impoverished children, NICUs, and children’s charitable foundations. Several years later, Susan decided to continue a new tradition with Binkeez in the formal process of converting to a 501c3 non-profit to bring comfort to others that have not been given the gift of good health by designing and donating blankets for all ages of life that were in need of comfort when in patient in a hospital, nursing home or hospice setting through this non profit.
