About us: The International Society of Disaster Relief responds to the world’s natural disasters and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 2014, the ISDR offers humanitarian aid and essentials such as: food, safe water, shelter, medical assistance and educational resources to those affected by natural disasters. Contacting people in affected countries to start the relieving before we can get there 5. Providing victims the proper supplies and services needed such as safety shelters or food 6. Comforting those who've been affected by the disasters Interesting Facts: 1. Floods are the most widespread natural disaster aside from wildfire. 2. Damage paths of tornadoes can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long. 3. The Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean is known to consist 90% of the total 1900 active volcanoes all over the world. 4. Southern California experiences over 10,000 earthquakes every 365 days. Most are too small to be felt. 5. Over 2.6 billion people have been affected by natural disasters in the past decade. 6. The cost of damage caused by disasters in 15 times higher than it was 50 years ago. Some geographically affected areas: -Jakarta, Indonesia -Osaka-Kobe, Japan -Manila, Philippines -Tehran, Iran -Los Angeles -Singapore -Shanghai -Kolkata, India -Nagoya, Japan -Pearl River Delta, China -Tokyo-Yokohama Stakeholders: -Government -Relief teams/NGO's -Affected Victims Article Summary: Summarized The main idea of this article “Rogers, Telus won’t give customer info to police without a warrant” is that if police and agencies don’t have a warrant, the mobile companies Rogers Communications and Telus will not go out of their way and give customer information out to them whether it be for help or not. This follows the recent landmark decision that was made by the Supreme Court of Canada declaring privacy for the people who go online who solemnly deserve it. Subscribers of the company Rogers Communications were worried about the actual safety of their information, and inquired for overall strengthened privacy of their personal details. From government and police agencies last year, Rogers apparently had gotten nearly 175,000 requests for customer info. Telus believes “Protecting our customers' privacy is vitally important to Telus, and we have a long-standing practice of only providing confidential customer information to third parties pursuant to valid court orders or other applicable law,” stated by them. Even internet service providers could be giving out personal info of their customers out to government agencies, if they didn’t have a warrant which means that we should be more careful about who we give out our information too even it it’s a big company, we wouldn’t want to end up like the customers of Rogers and Telus under the balance. Relation to Civics This article relates to civics because the basic rights of the citizens who are also customers to Rogers Communications and Telus, are being violated by government agencies and the police, who were formed to help people, but instead the opposite is occurring. Since the government agencies and the police are requesting the personal info from the customers from these mobile companies, they’d assume Rogers and Telus would hand it over, but instead, without a warrant they’re not getting the information from them. If it were to happen, most likely the owner of the information would be unaware of his or her own privacy being invaded as a citizen in Canada where it is supposed to be a great country, which to me is not something that I pray of happening. The government should be encouraging the privacy of their citizens, not decreasing it. ~Created for school-purposes only~

Markham Lions Club

Markham Lions are a dedicated group of men and women who, over the years, have voluntarily raised over 1.5 million dollars to support a variety of community projects for the benefit of all. The Lions motto "We Serve" is exemplified by the many projects relating to sight and hearing, such as our support for "Seeing-Eye" dogs and "Hearing-Ear" dogs and Vision Testing in local schools. The Charter night was on November 30, 1943, at St. Andrews United Church with 39 Lions present and 162 guests. The first president, John Cattanach and the first slate of officers were installed. Membership grew in the 1970's and 1980's to over 80 members and today in 2009, membership stands at 49 members. Originally named the Markham-Unionville Lions Club until 1977 when Markham sponsored the Unionville Lions Club as a separate club. Our first service project was sponsoring the High School Air Cadet Corps and this continues today with our sponsorship of the public speaking contestants from the Air Cadet Corps of Markham. Over the year, major projects have included purchasing equipment for the Markham Stouffville Hospital, the Markham Centennial Pool, Thomson Court Senior Apartments, Markhaven Seniors Home, Morgan Park Pool, Markham Museum, Participation House, York Regional Police Station Community Room, and Oakville's Guide Dog School. A strong sense of Community spirit and comradeship is prevalent among the Lions with everyone working to make each project a success.
