The mission of KIPP Baltimore is to create and operate public schools in Baltimore City that lead students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and a diversity of skill levels to attend and succeed in four-year colleges.Work hard. Be nice. KIPP Baltimore Schools have no entrance requirements or selection criteria in their entry grades. Currently all students are chosen through a lottery of children. Most of our students enter performing well below their academic grade level. 97% of KIPP Baltimore students are African-American, and 84% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Every student, parent and faculty member of a KIPP Baltimore school signs a Commitment to Excellence to uphold the core values of the program. KIPP Baltimore currently operates two schools in the Park Heights Community of Baltimore City: KIPP Ujima Village Academy, founded in 2002 by KIPP Baltimore Executive Director, Jason Botel, is KUVA is located in the Roland Patterson building at 4701 Greenspring Ave. Students attend school for up to 9.25 hours per day, as well as three weeks in the summer, and participate in extracurricular activities such as athletics, step and dance teams, art activities, NAL, etc. Part of the middle school process also includes finding college-preparatory high schools for our 8th Graders and that support is provided by the KIPP to College Program. KUVA students go on to attend public magnet programs, private schools, parochial schools and boarding schools across the country. Many students attending tuition-driven programs also receive scholarships. For three consecutive years, KUVA has had the highest performing public middle school program in Baltimore City. KUVA’s core values are F.I.R.E; FUN, IMPROVEMENT, RELATIONSHIPS and EXCELLENCE. At KUVA we strive for Excellence in every area of our students’ lives. The school’s motto is “Excellence without Exception.” KIPP Harmony Academy, starting in August 2009 by Principal Natalia Walter, is a public charter elementary school that holds high expectations for student achievement that will put children on the path to college beginning in Kindergarten. The school, located at 2810 Shirley Ave, will begin in August 2009 with Kindergarten and then grow over the next five years to an elementary school serving 590 students in grades K-4. KHA students will attend school for up to 8.5 hours per day and for 2-3 weeks in the summer. KHA will provide regular field lessons outside of school, service learning, and daily art instruction. As the school grows, students will receive instruction in instrumental music. KHA’s values are B.R.I.G.H.T.; Be Brave, Reach, Innovate, Give, Honor and Today for Tomorrow.
