EL PROGRAMA DE VIVIENDA TEMPORAL (TLP) de Latin American Youth Center (LAYC): Apoya a los jóvenes desamparados del Distrito de Columbia Se estima que anualmente alrededor de 2.000 jóvenes deambulan en las calles del Distrito de Columbia y al menos el 25% de ellos, no tienen un lugar donde refugiarse o pasar una noche abrigada y segura. Para los jóvenes que salen o son "expulsados" de su casa, tienen éxito en la escuela, obtienen un empleo, y el desarrollo de las habilidades necesarias para una transición exitosa de la adolescencia a la edad adulta estable, es especialmente difícil. Por eso se requiere de programas que garanticen una intervención temprana y oportuna para esta población que va en ascenso. Que hacemos para ayudarles? El Programa de Hogares de Acogida Transitoria (TLP) de LAYC brinda a los jóvenes desamparados o expulsados de sus familias entre los 16-22 años un hogar estable para vivir por 18 meses donde se les ofrece seguridad, apoyo y respeto para garantizar su transformación a la adultez asumiendo estilos de vida saludables que los conduzcan al éxito y bienestar. Que se les ofrece a los jóvenes participantes? •Promovemos el desarrollo de habilidades interpersonales e intrapersonales, incluyendo habilidades para establecer relaciones positivas con compañeros y adultos, tomar decisiones y manejar el estrés •Ayudamos en la búsqueda de oportunidades de educación, preparación GED, capacitación post-secundaria y formación profesional •Asistencia en la preparación para la búsqueda y obtención de empleo a través de orientación profesional y conexiones laborales •Educación, información y asesoramiento para prevenir, tratar y reducir el abuso de sustancias •Atención de salud mental, incluyendo la terapia individual y de grupo •Cuidado de la salud física, incluyendo exámenes físicos de rutinas evaluaciones de salud y tratamiento de emergencias •Apoyo para el desarrollo de habilidades de autosuficiencia Que necesitamos para apoyarlos? El Programa recluta familias/individuos que deseen ofrecer un espacio en sus hogares para que estos jóvenes puedan encontrar el éxito en la vida. Para garantizar un proceso exitoso la familia/individuos de acogida reciben apoyo económico por la ayuda que brindan a los jóvenes. LAYC TRANSITIONAL LIVING PROGRAM: Serving Runaway and Homeless Youth in the District of Columbia LAYC estimates that annually up to 2,000 youth are runaway, homeless or living on the streets in the District of Columbia, and on any given day 500 young people qualify as runaway and homeless youth. For youth who exit or are “kicked out” of their home, succeeding in school, obtaining employment, and developing the skills necessary to transition from adolescence into stable adulthood is especially challenging. Prevention and early intervention services for this population is critical. The LAYC Transitional Living Program (TLP) provides temporary residential services, up to 18 months, to homeless or runaway youth ages 16-22. Our dedicated bilingual staff guarantees all program participants: •Basic life-skill building, including consumer education and instruction in budgeting, the use of credit, housekeeping, healthy habits, food preparation •Interpersonal and intrapersonal skill building, including enhancing young people’s abilities to establish positive relationships with peers and adults, make decisions and manage stress •Educational opportunities, GED preparation, postsecondary training and vocational education •Assistance in job preparation and attainment, career counseling and job placement •Education, information and counseling to prevent, treat and reduce substance abuse •Mental health care, including individual and group counseling •Physical health care, including routine physicals, health assessments, and emergency treatment Program curriculum and services prepare youth who are homeless make a successful transition to self-sufficient living and general wellbeing. The Transitional Living Program calls on willing individuals and families to provide its’ participants with stable, safe, supportive host-home stays. Host families in the program provide the guidance and compassion youth need to find success in school, employment and in relationships. Host parents actively team up with TLP staff and youth to develop a case plan and achieve participants’ goals. Hosts receive financial assistance for their services. Program staff support is comprehensive and accessible at all times. As a host parent you can offer DC youth shelter and help them build happy memories.
