"Doula" is an ancient Greek term meaning "woman's slave". In modern times, it has evolved into the term used to describe a person experienced with birth who offers support to a laboring mother prenatally, during labour and birth, as well as during the postpartum period. A labour doula empowers the clients she works with by providing information, emotional support and physical comfort. She is a valuable addition to the maternity team, ensuring the woman (and her partner, if applicable) are empowered to make the choices they feel most comfortable with and have the opportunity to have the birth experience they desire.
