Description
The word military calls to mind men and women in uniform, those who are today serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is not hard to imagine the sacrifices that these men and women make. But the images that are too often forgotten are those of wives, husbands, children who stay behind. Their commitment to our country lies in the sacrifices they have to make while supporting the family member who serves. Over 2 million children have a parent who is in the military. Over 48,000 have a parent that has been wounded or killed during the current conflict. The period before and during deployment can be quite stressful for a young child. The fear of a parent being injured or even killed can be an ongoing worry. Other difficulties include separation anxiety and the adjustments that must be made when only one parent is home such as additional responsibilities with household chores or helping to care for siblings. When parents return from deployment, they are not always the same. Major injuries, such as the loss ofa limb, Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are life-altering and children oftenhave a hard time understanding the reason for a significant change in the appearance, personality or behavior of a parent.

For the past 14 years, the HRAC has been CO's primary provider of public health information, programming, and advocacy. The Harm Reduction Action Center is the only Colorado public health agency specifically focusing on injection drug users and their sexual partners that would not otherwise have access to appropriate health education, healthcare services, and emotional support designed specifically for the needs and culture of the IDU community. Formerly known as the “Little Red House” in the West side of Denver, the Harm Reduction Action Center serves more than 1,700 people affected by injection drug-use every year. HRAC (formally known as the Harm Reduction Project/Drop-In Center) is a recognized expert in providing HIV & Hepatitis C prevention programming, using harm-reduction principles to reduce the negative consequences of drug use impacting individuals, families and the larger community. Harm reduction enables us to meet drug users "where they're at," addressing the conditions of use along with the use itself. The Harm Reduction Action Center develops personal relationships with clients, guided by compassion, mutual respect, and evidence-based solutions, empowering clients to reduce the harmful effects of marginalized lifestyles. We are located at 733 Santa Fe Drive in Denver, Colorado. We are open for client drop-in services Monday through Friday from 9am to noon.
