"Maharani Mehendi" Our henna artist Farhana Sattar is, based in surrey, who loves spending her free time doing beautiful henna designs as a henna artist. She doesn’t think of henna as “work” – for her it’s more of a passion. From doing henna on herself while still in primary school, her art form has since evolved into more of a profession, and it thankfully now looks less like a 9-year old’s spiderweb and a bit more like work of art. Farhaha- "I started doing henna on myself when I was still in primary school. I first taught myself from pictures and trial-and-error on my own hands. It always intrigued me how something so ‘simple’ can be made into an art form – how you can use the human body as a canvas for something beautiful." Making a living Professionally, Farhana has been doing occasional henna since 2001. From 2001 to 2014, she has been a artist to offer henna tattoos and design. As of June 2014 her business is growing steadily as general interest in henna grows. "I love creating something beautiful every time – there is always something unique that can be done. I really feel like I contribute to making someone else’s life beautiful by sharing my talents and passion with them. That’s what I love most about it." The growth of henna The henna industry is expanding, not just in North America but as a global trend. Vancouver can be likened to Manhattan; it is a cultural mixing pot – henna temporary tattoos are a growing fashion trend across all cultures and are no longer limited to only South-Asian customs as once was the case. I love watching how new brides get excited and self-confident about their weddings – they are like princesses when they start getting their henna done :) As henna becomes more fashionable globally, henna patterns are being used as a means of individual expression and have begun appearing on all manner of objects – cakes, walls, candles, shoes, guitars… the list goes on. Of course, Farhana has had a few attempts these – some with more success than others. Art is an expression of creativity after all ;) The future For now, Farhana is hoping to grow her henna trade, with the medium term goal of having a stable income from the business. Her long term dream is to one day open her own Henna college, where she can put to practice all the things she has learned by working in the spa industry, along with her passion for helping others. She also plans to be involved in organisations for anti-violence against women and children.
