Description

Making Holidays Bright is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to mending families one step at a time. It is estimated that 25% of children under the age of 18 are exposed to family members who are addicted to alcohol and/or drugs. Research has shown that children raised in this kind of environment are likely to develop depression or anxiety in adolescence and begin using alcohol and/or drugs at an early age. Having a parent(s) who are suffering from addiction can lead to a lifelong struggle and problems if the child doesn’t receive any help or support. In a chaotic, dysfunctional family, the lack or absence of external control through consistent loving discipline results in an inability to develop internal discipline and self-control. The children learn not to depend on their parents to meet their needs – instead, they learn it is all up to them. Because they can’t trust their own parents, they become generally suspicious and mistrustful of all human beings. Yet, they are defenseless against the projection of blame and often feel responsible for their parents’ addiction. They become “little adults” that feel compelled to accept responsibilities well beyond their years. At Making Holidays Bright we try to rebuild these relationships between parent(s) and child. We work with addiction centers and sobriety based halfway houses that are helping men and women who are struggling with their alcohol and/or drug addiction. We accomplish this by holding events during the holidays so children can spend time with their parent(s) during the holidays. During the event an AA speaker meeting is held so the children can attend with their parent(s) to understand what happens during an AA meeting and be introduce to the 12 steps program which the parent(s) are practicing to assist in their sobriety. It also gives the child a chance to hear from a speaker who shares his/her life story which includes his/her struggles with substance abuse and what they did to able to get sober. Also during the end of year holiday event we will serve lunch and host “play” stations that the children can have some fun and interact with their parents. The event ends with Santa and his elf showing up to pass out gifts to all the attending children. When living at an addiction center or sobriety based halfway houses the men and woman are unable to leave the facility to visit with their families during the holidays. With the lack of the parent in the household these children would be unable to celebrate the holidays and may not receive any gifts. This is tragic when we consider that childhood is the foundation on which our entire lives are built on. Which is why Making Holidays Bright does everything possible to reconnect children with their parent(s), spend the holidays with their parent(s) and can receive at least one present from Santa. Making Holidays Bright works in conjunction with Steps House Center for Healing, a sobriety based halfway house in North Phoenix. We have no employees; we are run solely by Alumni and volunteers. With no employees we are able to use 100% of our proceeds from donations to be used towards purchasing toys and hosting the holiday event.
