Description

A gendered analysis of sexual violence recognizes that women and children make up the majority of those who experience sexual assault and men make up the majority (98%) of offenders (Statistics Canada, 2003). Given the high percentage of male perpetrators, the significant percentage of boys who experience sexual abuse and the men impacted when someone close to them experiences sexual violence, this is clearly a men’s issue too. We know that mainstream messages of masculinity can promote violence and limit boys’ and men’s expression and experiences. However, we have seen that when men join women and challenge these messages and violence, it can have a powerful impact on young people! MAASV provides training to men in our community on issues related to sexual violence, concepts of masculinity and how men can be active in ending violence against women. Men can use this training in their personal relationships or in their paid or volunteer work, to help young males develop a positive self image and relationships. Men who have taken this initial training and are interested in being peer-educators for SASC will then go through an interview and evaluation process. They must provide a satisfactory criminal and personal reference check and participate in further training. SASC peer-educators: • Participate in public education opportunities as requested by SASC • Organize independent fundraising activities in support of SASC • Support SASC initiatives/events as requested
