The Mental Game Plan is an Important program for Student Athletes because it teaches an important life skill: Goal setting: setting up your life so you can Win The Mental Game Plan is a coordinated system of Techniques designed to help student athletes turn stress energy into better performance. The overall outcome of the game plan is to overcome non physical problems successfully. Trying harder will not make an athlete better nor will loud self criticism. The key to greater success is Self- examination along with daily action steps to self improvement the gets results. Adjusting ones attitude as it related to athletic performance is a on going journey that requires commitment and dedication. “The mental edge is the hardest edge to maintain daily.” Developing mental toughness is the ability to accept strong criticism and set backs without competing less effectively. I like to call this the DAR factor. The DAR factor is Desire to win, Aggressiveness and responsibility. When a player has a strong desire to win and is willing to be aggressive to reach that goal without being over responsible that is a good formula for success. In addition to DAR there is the player’s ability to quickly recover from error. A important factor in being successful is being able to let go of a play or mistake, learn from it and move on to the next. All this takes place inside the athlete and may not be visible. But it is real and it does affect how a player performs. The seven traits of the mental game plan are put together as a useful tool you can use for preseason, during the season and post season. If you are wanting to KNOW who your players are and who they can become- this is the tool for you to use to improve your communications.
