Description

The Lake George Zone's Crew Leader Mentor Group is a group of aspiring and new Crew Leaders who work with each other and some more experienced volunteers to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become a Crew Leader Supervision and manage a Level 1 incident in the New South Wales Rural Fire Service. “The Lake George Crew Leader mentor Group was established in July 2013 to assist aspiring CLS candidates make the transition from CLW & CLV into the highly capable incident managers we expect them to be. The learning curve for crew leaders has become steep as the level of rigour, training and knowledge expected of a crew leader to effectively manage a modern fire ground also increases. This group provides a collaborative forum for discussion and learning that has proven to be highly effective when compared to the traditional classroom instruction model. By having members regularly come together and discuss a single topic in-depth the effective instruction time increases significantly and encourages critical discussion of techniques, ‘assumed’ knowledge and best practices allowing candidates to undertake formal assessment with a strong understanding of core concepts. When being assessed candidates are able to focus much more on the application of their knowledge and tackling the situation at hand, rather than the distraction of recalling poorly understood facts.= The group has a secondary benefit of exposing members and local officers (Brigade, Group etc) to one another in a more personal way than many may have experienced. This helps build a relationship and mutual understanding between those who will likely be working closely together to manage incidents.”

SDMA is a CAMS affiliated organisation that runs Motorsport events at the Fairbairn Park Hillclimb Circuit in Canberra, ACT. What is a hillclimb? Hillclimbs are time trial motor racing, run one vehicle at a time on a section of sealed track that twists and turns up and around a hill. You start from stationary at the bottom of the hill and drive as quickly as you can up and around to the finish line. The Fairbairn Park Hillclimb Circuit is a Q shaped track with a short section from the start line leading to a full lap of the main circuit. On a competition day drivers typically get four or more runs with lap times ranging between 40 seconds to over 1 minute, with each drivers best time of the day counting for results. Vehicles are separated into classes depending on the type of vehicle and level of modification, this allows drivers to compete on skill not just on their vehicle capabilities. The course is easy on the vehicles, which consume little fuel as the runs are short. This enables anyone with a valid L2S CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motor Sport) license and a mechanically sound car, fitted with a fire extinguisher of course, to compete. Drivers, both male and female, range from 14 years of age and up, giving the sport a very broad field of competitors. Drivers competing are mostly locals although the Fairbairn track attracts regular interstate competitors as it is the most frequently run NSW (and possibly Australian) Hillclimb. In 2009 we ran 10 events each with an average of 46 competitors.
