Inspiring leadership... changing the game In 2000, Orlando Bowen was an IT consultant in downtown Chicago and had just finished an impressive athletic career as an NCAA football player; he was on the fast track to success. However his life was suddenly changed when on vacation in Jamaica. Orlando was approached by a young boy in the street asking for money to buy bread. In that moment, he knew something was missing- none of his accomplishments would have any impact on the situation of the young boy in front of him. When he was presented with the opportunity to play football for the Toronto Argonauts, he accepted the offer to pursue one of his original passions knowing that he would also then have the opportunity to impact young people through the sport. After doing some research for the Toronto District School Board Orlando founded Gameday Training and Consulting- an organization created to address the growing issues affecting young people. Along with several pro-athletes, Olympians and community leaders he delivered the Get S.W.O.L.E.™ program using the principles self respect, work hard, overcome adversity, lead by example, and excellence to teach young people to become leaders and create change in their communities. Following his retirement from football, Orlando turned Gameday into One Voice One Team- a youth leadership organization that has now become a registered charity. Today, One Voice One Team is run by passionate people who are committed to changing young people’s lives. Programs run in 6 school boards in a total of 40 schools in the Greater Toronto Area. The team mentor youth, share stories, train and develop leadership abilities and together serve in the community. Besides regular S.W.O.L.E.™ training days One Voice One Team also runs fundraising events, service events such as a community clean-ups or Habitat for Humanity house builds, S.W.O.L.E.™ Summer Camps and All-Star leadership trips. In 2012 that list will expand to include service trips abroad. The need continues to grow and One Voice One Team is striving to address it. It takes a village to raise a child, together we can use our passions and skills to make a difference. Join the movement… One Voice, One Team!
