What We Do The Ottawa Rambling Club provides outdoor recreational activities throughout the year, including hiking, snow shoeing and cross-country skiing. The Club has a regular weekend outings program in Gatineau Park and organizes several out of town trips each year. Our activities are described in general terms below but our Events Calendar provides more specific descriptions of individual outings. Hiking: Our hiking trips can vary from less than 10km to over 20km and may range in difficulty from marked trails over easy terrain to routes with significant elevation gain and rugged bushwhacks using map and compass navigation techniques. In the summer season our hikes may include swim stops. Snow Shoeing: Our snow shoe outings are typically between 10km and 15km in length and may be on well established trails or exploring new areas off trail. Cross-Country Skiing: Our cross-country ski outings are classic touring ski trips varying in length between 10km and 20km usually. The routes we ski vary between trackset green (beginner) trails to ungroomed black (expert) trails. Ski outings will almost always be designed for a lunch stop at one of the cabins in the park. Out Of Town Trips: The Club's out of town trips are usually 2-3 nights duration but may be longer. Recent destinations include Frontenac Park (staying in Westport), Spectacle Lake Lodge (near Barrys Bay), Adirondacks Park NY and the White Mountains NH. The Club also hosts several social events during the year in order to provide opportunities for members to get to know each other better in a more relaxed environment. Our Membership Our Membership The Club is a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization that welcomes members who like to experience fresh air, healthy exercise and enjoy companionship of like-minded individuals, with the added bonus of hiking to areas offering scenic vistas and varying flora and fauna. Membership is open to anyone 18 years of age or older. Young people 13 - 17 years of age are welcome as guests as long as they are accompanied by a supervising member. Communications with the members are carried out mainly electronically. The Club publishes a newsletter called the Rambler. A Brief History Of the Club The Ottawa Rambling Club was founded in January 1978. Its roots, however, go back to the now defunct Outdoor Club which came into being in the late 1950's and was affiliated with the Civil Service Recreation Association. To open up membership to those who were not public servants and to lower the cost of organized hiking, a few of the Outdoor Club founding members formed an independent group that came to be the Ottawa Rambling Club.
