The Peacock Process Aside from that old-style expertise and the convenience of being able to drive right in to load up your lumber, one of the things that distinguishes traditional lumber yards like Peacock Lumber from today’s big box type stores is the process the lumber goes through once it reaches our door. We don’t simply take delivery of a finished product from who knows where then stack it on our shelves for you to rummage through. Our lumber goes through an extensive process to ensure you get the very best product for your money. The Peacock Process goes like this: •Raw wood is brought in, cut square from selected saw mills. •This raw wood is then set on sticks and left in our yard to air dry. •White Pine will reach a desired moisture level (12-15%) while air drying, and will then be milled into a variety of products. Some items including flooring require the pine to be kiln dried. •After a period of air drying, hardwoods are taken to one of our on-site dry kilns and dried to a moisture content of 6%-8% •During the drying process, all lumber is tested daily for moisture content and signs of stress. (Uneven moisture content in lumber can cause warping and cracking) •Once the lumber reaches the perfect moisture content and is relieved of stress, it is either sold as rough lumber to furniture makers, woodworkers etc; or it is sent over to our on-site mill. Here it will be made into a multitude of different products including moulding, flooring and siding. As you can see, Peacock Lumber has virtually the entire supply chain on-site. And it is this attention to detail, which has enabled us to provide you with superior lumber products for the past 70 years.
