The Delta Delta Sigma Chapter was established in Denver, Colorado in 1960. This was when the civil rights movement was very active and many African Americans fought, sacrificed, and died to gain equal rights in this country. Delta Delta Sigma was formed from the undergraduate chapter, Gamma Delta Chapter at the University of Denver. The present undergraduate chapters are Nu Xi at the Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Iota Psi at University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, and Mu Mu at the University of Colorado in Boulder The chapter members were college graduates of the fraternity, the governing rules required this for a chapter. The brothers took a significant step at this point, to organize themselves and carry forth the vision of our founders here in Denver. There were ten (10) active members in the chapter. They accepted the challenge and appointed chairmen for the three (3) National Programs of Bigger and Better Business, Social Action, and Education. The chapter took out a life membership with the N.A.A.C.P and plays an active role in the current social issues that exist in Denver. The chapter established and maintained a closer relationship with City Councilman, Elvin Caldwell at the time, to keep informed of activities in the North East Denver community. The chapter also kept in contact with local government officials, educators and worked in various high schools (Manual, East, and South). These relationships set the foundation for developing a scholarship program. In the early years of the chapter, annual events like the Sigma Sweetheart dance was held in October with the proceeds going to the scholarship fund. In December, an annual New Years Eve Ball was held and many of Denvers elite looked forward to attending. These major fundraisers were successful for the young chapter members. On the Local level, Delta Delta Sigma supports programs of area food banks like The Denver Rescue Mission and participates in annual community events such as the American Cancer Society, the Martin Luther King Marade, and the March of Dimes' "March for Babies".
