ROC Boston (Restaurant Opportunities Center of Boston) is a membership-based organization for workers, employers, and consumers, focused on improving working conditions and quality of life for restaurant workers in the greater Boston area and nationwide.
Background ROC Boston is an affiliate of ROC United (Restaurant Opportunities Centers United), a non-profit worker center dedicated to improving working conditions in the restaurant industry. About ROC ROC's mission is to improve working conditions for restaurant workers everywhere. The ROC United model represents a new way for workers in the restaurant industry to have a voice. Through an entirely participatory process that surrounds the restaurant industry from all sides, through a three-pronged model: Research and Policy ROC engages in rigorous, statistically significant research of the restaurant industry that allows workers to understand the industry in every market where there is a local ROC. The research utilizes a combination of surveys and interviews with a statistically representative sample of workers and employers that provide insight into the labor dynamics of a particular restaurant market. Read more about Research and Policy at ROC here: http://rocunited.org/research-resources/our-reports/ High Road In every restaurant market there are ethical employers. They usually feel isolated and alone in a “dog-eat-dog” environment. The goal of the high road roundtable is to bring these good folks together and allow them to share best practices. The Roundtable demonstrates that another model is not just possible but profitable. Additionally, Roundtable restaurant owners will visit legislators side by side with workers, to lobby for legislation that the local ROC Policy Committee has chosen to work on. Read more about the High Road here: http://rocunited.org/our-work/high-road/ Workplace Justice ROC holds low-road, law-breaking restaurant owners accountable via campaigns that use a combination of litigation and direct action like a vice grip to correct problems and legal violations in the workplace. The campaigns focus on the most egregious violators of labor and employment law, which are abundant in the restaurant industry. Learn how you can take action here: http://rocunited.org/action-center/consumer-action/ ROC Boston is dedicated to winning improved conditions for restaurant workers locally and nationally and raising public recognition of restaurant workers' contributions to the city. We are also committed to working as part of a coalition of community groups in Massachusetts to raise the minimum wage and tipped minimum wage in the state and at the federal level, and make paid sick time a reality for restaurant workers everywhere.
