The official page of the Seagrass-Watch global assessment and monitoring program
Seagrass-Watch is a global participatory seagrass assessment and monitoring program. The program collects quantitative data on seagrasses, their distribution and their associated flora/fauna by means of simple (non-destructive) scientifically rigorous monitoring protocols. Developed in 1998, the program provides an early warning of coastal ecological decline. It is a multi faceted program with the first part of the program focused on education, awareness and capacity building and the second part focused on long-term monitoring. The monitoring is a valuable tool for improving management practices by allowing resource managers to know whether resource status and condition is stable, improving or declining. Seagrass-Watch identifies areas important for seagrass conservation and assists with tracking global patterns in seagrass health. Seagrass-Watch also helps to assess human impacts which have the potential to destroy or degrade seagrass ecosystems and decrease their yield of natural resources. We must all work together to protect these valuable seagrass meadows along our coasts.
