Description

Seagrass-Watch is a global participatory seagrass assessment and monitoring program. The program collects quantitative data on seagrasses, their distribution and their associated flora/fauna by means of simple (non-destructive) scientifically rigorous monitoring protocols. Developed in 1998, the program provides an early warning of coastal ecological decline. It is a multi faceted program with the first part of the program focused on education, awareness and capacity building and the second part focused on long-term monitoring. The monitoring is a valuable tool for improving management practices by allowing resource managers to know whether resource status and condition is stable, improving or declining. Seagrass-Watch identifies areas important for seagrass conservation and assists with tracking global patterns in seagrass health. Seagrass-Watch also helps to assess human impacts which have the potential to destroy or degrade seagrass ecosystems and decrease their yield of natural resources. We must all work together to protect these valuable seagrass meadows along our coasts.

General Info

More than 25 countries globally participate in the program and monitoring is currently occurring at over 300 sites and growing. The success of the program is that information collected can be used in local decision making with regard to habitat management practices and protection (ie Local Eyes: Gobal Wise). Anyone can participate in Seagrass-Watch, including: scientists, environment managers, non-government organisations, students (school and university) and local citizens. The level of participation depends on local resources (support, coordination, capital and scientific expertise). Where possible, Seagrass-Watch integrates with existing education and scientific programs. Seagrass-Watch has a strong scientific underpinning which is provided by Seagrass-Watch Head Quarters. Based at the Northern Fisheries Centre in Cairns (Australia), Seagrass-Watch HQ's role is to provide training and manage/validate/interpret the data. Seagrass-Watch HQ ensures the QAQC protocols are followed and that the program is producing data of high quality, ensuring time and resources are not wasted.
