Description

We adopted Sebastian recently from Toronto Cat Rescue. When we went in twice to see him before adopting him he was the only one who did not come up to the window as people looked on at all the cats who were in need of homes, he basically just ignored everyone who came to look while all the other cats and kittens would jump up and grab everyone's attention. What people probably took from this was that maybe he wasn't a friendly cat, maybe he was lazy, maybe something was wrong with him or maybe he was just a plain black cat. Whatever the reason was, he was left behind over and over again for four years while other cats were rescued and taken to good homes. We decided to take a chance on Sebastian as our first pet in our new home and what we found out after adopting him is that he wasn't unfriendly, he wasn't lazy and the only thing wrong with him was that he didn't know a life existed outside of a cage. Sebastian had been in "the system" since birth and at four years had never known a home except for his cage at the shelter and possibly a foster home for a bit. After being in a shelter environment for his entire life he just wasn't excited any more when onlookers came to the adoption centres which made it easy for people to just pass right by him and onto the younger, more energetic and more colourful cats. After nearly two weeks with Sebastian he is learning that life is not what he thought it was and he has started to come out of his shell with very little effort on our part. It will take some time and he will have the effects of shelter life with him for a while, but every day we are seeing his real personality come out little by little as he lets down his guard and starts to realize that he will never be locked up again. He is becoming as playful as all the other cats we saw at the adoption centre, loves to sleep on our bed at night, is relaxed around kids, hates to be alone in a room and if we don't feed him by 7:30 every morning he becomes the most talkative cat ever. These are just some of the personality traits that have appeared the more "at home" he becomes and we can't wait to see what personality comes out in the days, weeks, months and years to come. When you go to adopt a cat and there's that one who just doesn't get as excited to see people as all the other cats, is a little older then the cute kittens jumping around the cage, or is the black cat who doesn't look as "photogenic" as the colourful cats, give him/her a chance. You'll be pleasantly surprised, we were.
