Student Association of Sociology and Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society
The SAS is designed to bring those who share a common interest in sociology together in a social, pre-professional and academic environment. The SAS is dedicated to the expansion of learning opportunities for sociology majors and minors on and off campus, as well as to participate in social research and community service opportunities. We wish to provide information on how to progress in a students’ academic and professional career including information for high-school, undergraduate, and graduate students. Also, the SAS hopes to “bridge the gap” between students and the Sociology Department faculty and staff through classroom experience and volunteer opportunities. AKD stands for Alpha Kappa Delta, a non-secret, democratic, international society of scholars dedicated to the ideal of Athropon Katamannthanein Diakonesin or "to investigate for the purpose of service." AKD seeks to acknowledge and promote excellence in scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, and such other social and intellectual activities as will lead to improvement in the human condition. AKD was founded at the University of Southern California in 1920 by Dr. Emory S. Bogardus and became affiliated with the Association of College Honor Societies in 1967. The UNC Charlotte chapter, the ETA chapter, was established in 1974.
