Southern District Motorsports Association (SDMA)

at Sutton Road, Canberra Australia

SDMA is a CAMS affiliated organisation that runs Motorsport events at the Fairbairn Park Hillclimb Circuit in Canberra, ACT. What is a hillclimb? Hillclimbs are time trial motor racing, run one vehicle at a time on a section of sealed track that twists and turns up and around a hill. You start from stationary at the bottom of the hill and drive as quickly as you can up and around to the finish line. The Fairbairn Park Hillclimb Circuit is a Q shaped track with a short section from the start line leading to a full lap of the main circuit. On a competition day drivers typically get four or more runs with lap times ranging between 40 seconds to over 1 minute, with each drivers best time of the day counting for results. Vehicles are separated into classes depending on the type of vehicle and level of modification, this allows drivers to compete on skill not just on their vehicle capabilities. The course is easy on the vehicles, which consume little fuel as the runs are short. This enables anyone with a valid L2S CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motor Sport) license and a mechanically sound car, fitted with a fire extinguisher of course, to compete. Drivers, both male and female, range from 14 years of age and up, giving the sport a very broad field of competitors. Drivers competing are mostly locals although the Fairbairn track attracts regular interstate competitors as it is the most frequently run NSW (and possibly Australian) Hillclimb. In 2009 we ran 10 events each with an average of 46 competitors.
