The Department of Revenue collects approximately 87 percent of total state tax revenue. In addition to collecting state taxes, the Department of Revenue collects taxes for local, county and municipal governments. In collecting taxes, the department enforces the revenue laws fairly and impartially in an effort to encourage voluntary taxpayer compliance. The department also apportions revenue collections for distribution to the various state funds and local units of government. More than 900 people work for the Department of Revenue in jobs ranging from taxpayer assistants to tax auditors to title and customer service representatives. It is the responsibility of these employees to provide fair, firm and effective enforcement of the tax laws with courteous and friendly service.
