In February 1976, the school was officially established in the classrooms of St. Michael's. The twenty-eight students and four teachers adopted textbooks used in Taiwan to learn reading, writing, and speaking in Chinese, in addition to lessons in Chinese culture, such as traditional song and dance. By the early 1980s, the Chinese population in Richmond had grown dramatically. To accomodate the ever-expanding student body, the school moved to the St. Catherine's School in 1988. Due to its growing size and influence in the Chinese community, the school began to organize events outside of the classroom, such as a Chinese New Year's celebration, concert performances by Chinese musicians, and summer picnics. Students in the traditional dance class also performed locally in the Children's Festival, the Asian Festival, and the state fair. The year 2000 was a particularly successful one for the RCS. At that point, the school had grown to accomodate ten language classes, three adult culture classes (flower arrangement, chi-kung, and Chinese painting), and more than 120 students, both children and adults. The school's members helped organize Henrico County's Dragon 2000 celebration, a major undertaking for all participants to educate Richmonders about Chinese culture and history in honor of the new millenium. The event was a smashing success, with approximately 9,500 citizens from the Richmond metropolitan in attendance.

Description

For the past thirty years, the Richmond Chinese School has had an enormous impact on both the Chinese and non-Chinese community in central Virginia by promoting diversity and educating others in foreign language and culture. The school's great success has been possible due to a number of capable leaders who serve as principals, board members, teachers, and volunteers, as well as a devoted and passionate student body; it is because of these dedicated members that the school will continue to succeed in spreading the influence of Chinese language and culture for the next thirty years and beyond.
