Description

WorK Readiness Program (WKRP) The Salvation Army Work Readiness Program is designed to help people (18 years of age or older) who are under or unemployed gain the skills needed to get and keep employment. WKRP has been operational since 1996 and seeks to improve the employability of high-needs social assistance recipients with financial support from the Province of Manitoba as well as individuals who are under or unemployed and not on social assistance. Program Goals: To improve the employability of participants by: » Helping individuals develop basic life skills through one-on-one counselling and daily classes focusing on computer skills, job skills and life skills » Assisting individuals in the preparation of their resumes » Improving interview skills and helping individuals present themselves and their skills in a positive manner About the Program The Work Readiness Program offers daily job search assistance by offering job search and life skills classes, basic job search related computer skills classes, and a supervised job search. WKRP focuses on developing a good work ethic within job seekers. Clients are required to participate in their daily job search while attending classes, and graduate from program when they find employment. WKRP is not a job placement organization. WKRP teaches participants the skills necessary to find employment. While the resources needed to apply for jobs are available to them through the program, they have to apply for the jobs themselves. This is so that if participants become unemployed again in the future they are able to use the skills they gained as a participant in WKRP and job search on their own. Those involved in the program will participate daily in the following: Job search assistance classes » Preparing for the Job Search » Reading a Job Ad » Resume Development (2 days) » Application Forms (2 days) » Overcoming Barriers to Employment (2 days) » Skills for Keeping the Job (3 days) » Workplace Harassment (2 days) » Cover Letters (3 days) » WHMIS » Interview Skills (5 days) » Employment Standards » Workplace Health and Safety Computer classes » Keyboarding » Microsoft Windows » Microsoft Word and Excel » Internet and Email Life skills classes » Anger Management (5 days) » Goal Setting » Self Esteem » Stress Management (3 days) » Motivation » Time Management » Financial Literacy (2 days) » Dealing with Change » Decision Making » Communication Skills (4 days) » Criminal Records » Addictions (5 days) » Relationships (5 days) » Understanding Personalities » Problem Solving Skills One-on-one career counselling » Resume development » Cover letter development » Interview preparation » Mock interviews » Career planning Active daily job search » Internet and telephone access » Resume faxing & mailing » Photocopying & printing Participants of the Work Readiness Program have access to the following short-term training opportunities: » Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) » Forklift Operator Certification » Emergency First Aid/CPR Certification » Safe Food Handling Certification » Serving it Safe Certification Other assistance for program participants may include: » Eye exams and eye glasses » Interview clothing » Replacement identification » Criminal record check » Child abuse registry check STages Education Program (STEP) What is STEP?
