Tap water has been chemically treated for living organisms. This usually involves adding bleach to kill bacteria, viruses and parasites. Little filtration is done to the water. The water in different cities may vary significantly in its purity. This is the reason why consumers are turning to bottled water, but do they really know the type of bottled water they are drinking? TYPES OF BOTTLED WATER: Spring Water Spring water is simply water that has come from an underground source such as well or spring. Bottlers are responsible for making sure their water is free of bacteria, viruses and parasites, but much like tap water, they do little more. Spring water often contains elevated dissolved solids and may still contain many of the mineral salts, inorganic metals and chemicals that can be found in tap water. Filtered Water Filtered water has been passed through a fine strainer and/or activated carbon filter. A filter is like a screen on your home’s window, it keeps out the big bugs, the cottonwood and the puffs. The size of the holes in the screen determines the quality the water. While carbon filters reduced bad tastes and odours like chlorine, most are not effective in removing contaminants like nitrates, lead, sodium, bacteria… and the list goes on. Carbon filters can also remove organic chemicals, however, most are too small to be very effective. The quality of filtered water frequently goes down as the filter gets ages. Filters eventually get clogged and must be replaced. Using a clogged filter may lead to the filter rupturing, dispensing all of those impurities directly into your glass… for you to drink! Purified Water Purification does more to clean the water than with a filter. The most common purification system is called Reverse Osmosis. This purification process is what Water Hut is utilizing. This system uses filters to remove particles, and then uses a special membrane to purify the water. This removes most of contaminants (chemicals like bleach, fluoride and toxic waste and dissolved solids like mercury, etc), leaving water to its purest form. They must contain 10 PPM or less of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) compared to Spring Water that typically contains 300 – 450 PPM of TDS. Reverse Osmosis Water Hut is utilizing Reverse Osmosis technology to produce great tasting, high quality drinking water. Reverse Osmosis, also known as hyper filtration, is the finest filtration known. This process will allow the removal of particles as small as ions from a solution. Reverse Osmosis is used to purify water and remove salts and other impurities in order to improve the color, taste or properties of the fluid. It is capable of rejecting bacteria, salts, sugars, proteins, particles, dyes, and other constituents that have a molecular weight of greater than 150-250 daltons. The separation of ions with reverse osmosis is aided by charged particles. This means that dissolved ions that carry a charge, such as salts, are more likely to be rejected by the membrane than those that are not charged, such as organics. The larger the charge and the larger the particle, the more likely it will be rejected. Minerals in Water The question, “What about my minerals?” is often asked when purified drinking water is mentioned. There are two kinds of minerals found in the food and water that we consume. These minerals are either organic or inorganic. Most of the minerals in our water are inorganic minerals, meaning they are not organic. Plants taken in inorganic minerals and produce organic minerals through photosynthesis. Our bodies can only utilize organic minerals. Some inorganic minerals found in water can actually be harmful to human health. Minerals such as nitrates, cadmium and lead can be toxic in small amounts. Organic minerals usually come from the fruits and vegetables we eat. Purified water will not wash away organic minerals from our bodies but instead cleanse the inorganic minerals that may cause kidney and gallstones or aches in joints, etc. due to the fact our bodies cannot assimilate inorganic minerals. The clearest picture of this can be demonstrated by taking a rock and pulverizing it into a dust, then stirring that dust into a glass of water. For the most part you can’t see, smell or taste its presence, but you’re drinking dirt. If the minerals found in our drinking water were able to be utilized by our bodies and were necessary for good health, we would literally have to drink hundreds and sometimes thousands of 8-ounce glasses a day to obtain the recommended daily allowances.
