Waterloo’s unique inventor-owned intellectual property policy makes us a leader in the transfer of ideas and technology. In our research, as in all else, we are oriented to the needs of society, and work closely with industry, government, medicine, and more. Our faculty members have an impressive record of achievement, including 18 Canada Research Chairs, an Ontario Research Chair, 19 Premier's Research Excellence Awards, over 40 Early Researcher Awards, six NSERC industrial research chairs, and an NSERC design chair. When local entrepreneurs established our university, with Engineering as the founding faculty, they approached the task from a business perspective, knowing creativity and inventiveness were the keys to problem solving.
