Description

Annual Fund Raiser for FNQ Hospital Foundation In 1981 Wayne and Rhonda Leonard lived every parent’s worst nightmare when their first child arrived prematurely and had to be transferred from the Calvary Hospital to the intensive care unit at the Cairns Base Hospital. After this ordeal it was an easy decision when in 2001, they were approached by Nick Bernabie from the Far North Queensland Hospital to sponsor the inaugural Cairns to Cowboys Motorcycle Muster to raise funds for a Paediatric Transport Cot for the Cairns Base Hospital. The Paediatric Transport Cot is a stand-alone monitoring and resuscitation system used to transport critically ill and pre term babies around Far North Queensland and as far south to Townsville and Brisbane for emergency treatment. The inaugural event “Wayne Leonard’s Cairns to Cowboys Motorcycle Muster” left Cairns on June 1 2002 with 30 motorcyclists and their pillions travelling to Townsville via Mission Beach for an exciting Cowboys Football Match. The event has since continued to grow. 2002 $19,087 Cairns to Cowboys 2003 $14,403 " " 2004 $35,550 " " 2005 $31,027 Cairns to Mission Beach 2006 $51,651 " " 2007 $71,877 Cairns to Cooktown 2008 $76,418 Cairns to Mission Beach 2009 $67,986 Cairns to Undara 2010 $70,800 Cairns to Magnetic Island 2011 $50,131 Cairns to Port Douglas 2012 $62,025 Cairns to Mission Beacch $519,928 Grand Total • 2002/03 The funds raised were used to assist with the purchase of a Paediatric Transport Cot for the Special Care Baby Unit. • 2004 – supported the refurbishment of an interview room for parents of critically ill babies as well as 6 pressure release mattresses valued at $3,500 each for the Intensive care unit at the Cairns Base Hospital • 2005 – Riders were on a mission – the ride raised money for the purchase of two Cairwave mattresses for Cairns Base Hospital.
